How to Safely Jump-Start a Car
If a vehicle needs a jump start, a couple of pieces of equipment are required. You will need a set of jumper cables and another vehicle to use as a host. Then just follow the steps below.
- Make sure both vehicles are in park and facing each other grille to grille. If you can't manage to put them face to face, then pull the host vehicle beside the one that needs boosting.
- Pull the hood release latch for both vehicles and prop up the hood with the hood stand.
- Locate the batteries on each vehicle and identify the positive and negative terminals.
- Connect the red clamp to the positive terminal on the dead battery. Then connect the other red clamp to the positive terminal to the host battery.
- Connect the black clamp to the terminal on the host battery.
- Then connect the other black clamp to an unpainted metal surface on the vehicle's frame. This is done to ground it.
- Once the above steps are complete correctly, start the host vehicle. Wait a couple of moments and try to start the dead vehicle.
- Once the dead vehicle starts, remove the clamps in the reverse order you connected them. Shut of the host vehicle and leave the dead vehicle running for at least 10 minutes.
